Pretend Make-up from Nail Polish

When I'm in the bathroom doing my make-up little girl is right beside me getting into things and pretending to do her makeup too.
When I saw this fab idea Here, I knew I had to give it a try.

Sidenote: I actually did this before Christmas (hence the 2011 watermarks) but I didn't give it to S until a couple of days ago.

Start out with an empty and cleaned out eyeshadow case.
Carefully pour different colors of nail polish into the compartments.

Let dry completely.
I actually set mine out in the garage for a couple of days because the nail polish I used had a very strong smell.

Give it to your little one to play with, along with an applicator of course.

She loves it!
I can't wait to empty some more containers so that I can add to her cosmetic bag!

  1. This is such a great idea, I love it!

  2. What a fun idea! You're such a great mommy!! :)

  3. This is a really cool idea, but I feel like it would almost be more expensive (wasting all the nail polish and such) than buying fake makeup. Do you have any cost comparison?

    1. Thanks! As far as the cost goes....

#1- I didn't really care because my daughter had fake makeup that I bought and she never touched it. She wasn't fooled she still wanted my makeup, this was a great solution to make her feel like she had the 'real' stuff.

#2- I hadn't used the eyeshadow from that case in FOREVER so it was destined for the garbage anyway, so I was just re-purposing/recycling. And I didn't mind using the nail polish, I have quite a few and I used colors that were older and weren't my faves.Although the pictures make it look like the compartments are filled to the brim, they are not. I just filled with enough color to cover the bottom. Therefore making the cost for me = nothing.

However if you were to buy eyeshadow with intent of cleaning it out for the case and buying nailpolish specifically for this project, Yes the cost would be more than buying fake makeup.

  4. Buy makeup (for the case) and nail Polish from dollar store. Can't get much more cost effective than that!

  5. Wouldnt it irritate their eyes though?

    1. It is dry when you give it to them, so no color would actually even appear on their skin. It's more pretend than anything :)

    2. Yup it is completely dry. No actual nail polish gets on the child's face at any time. It just gives the compartments color so they think its the real deal.

And as for chipping (which people have asked about on pinterest), I made the first set about a year and a half ago and it hasn't shown signs of chips or cracks yet and both my girls play with them almost daily.

  6. We totally did this! My girls still play with it even almost a year later!

    1. Awesome, both my girls still play with theirs too. And kids who come over love the makeup collection too!

  7. What a great idea, you can pick up nail polish really cheap at those discount stores.. I saw our local pharmacy selling out a giant bin full for $1 each.. a great way to use the old out of date makeup pallete I have.. My daughter got my makeup all over the carpet in my bedroom and it was a nightmare to remove so this will be a great alternative for her!

  8. With a screw-style cap and durable design this personalized nail polish bottle is certain to last through use and use and fill after fill.

I love hearing from you! If this is your first time here, say hello. I truly appreciate any comments given and read every single one. A new comment seriously makes my day. Thank you so much!
